Exactly seven days after departing Porto, Portugal, our Pilgrim +1 have walked continuously every day on their journey toward Santiago de Compostela.

Their adventure began in the lingering heat of a record-breaking European heat wave before transitioning into the more manageable temperatures of Portugal and Spain’s Atlantic coastline. Along the way, they have experienced two small ferry crossings, several refreshing swims in the Atlantic Ocean, countless memorable meals, a few well-earned glasses of wine, and the company of many new friends.

Most impressively, they have averaged more than 20 kilometres of walking each day. While a few blisters have inevitably appeared along the way, their feet have carried them steadily toward their destination, which is now within striking distance.
Back home, we have enjoyed daily check-ins and have followed their progress with a healthy dose of envy and admiration. Upon their return, we look forward to learning more about the technical aspects of walking such a remarkable distance, including the challenges, adaptations, and lessons learned from spending day after day on foot. Watch this blog space for that in the near future.
One message has emerged consistently throughout their journey: when preparing for a Camino, more preparation is always better than less. Physical conditioning, proper footwear, gradual training, and attention to foot health all contribute significantly to a successful and enjoyable experience.
Equally noteworthy has been the warmth and generosity they have encountered along the way. Without exception, their accommodations and hosts have exceeded expectations. The simple greeting of “Buen Camino” offered by locals and fellow pilgrims alike has lifted even the weariest spirits. Time and again, residents along the route have stepped out of their daily routines to welcome and assist travellers from around the world who have come to follow the historic Way of St. James.

Tomorrow morning, they will rise with the sun and begin their final day’s walk into Santiago de Compostela. All of us at The Podiatry Associates wish them a truly wonderful, meaningful, and fulfilling conclusion to their Camino journey.
Buen Camino!
