Allan brings decades of experience, advanced surgical training, and a reputation as a leader in both open and minimal incision foot surgery. His arrival significantly enhances our ability to offer patients comprehensive, evidence-based surgical and non-surgical foot care.
A Distinguished Background in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery
He began his medical training at the University of Toronto, before completing four years at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, where he earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree in 1984.
He went on to complete a rigorous Surgical Residency at Warminster General Hospital near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During this residency, Dr. Frankel developed extensive expertise in both traditional open surgical techniques and Minimal Incision Surgery (MIS) — a specialized skill set that remains relatively uncommon and highly sought after.
While training in the United States, Dr. Frankel also participated in Sports Medicine Clinics at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University, where professional athletes from the Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia 76ers received care. This exposure helped shape his approach to treating complex foot and ankle conditions with a focus on function, recovery, and long-term outcomes.
Leadership, Credentials, and Ongoing Contributions
Allan Frankel holds Associate Member status with both the American Board of Podiatric Surgeons (ABPS) and the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).
After returning to the Greater Toronto Area, Dr. Frankel founded Markham Podiatry in 1985, where he served the community for over 30 years. During this time, he continued advanced surgical training and played a key role in bringing modern surgical techniques and treatment protocols to the forefront of foot care in Ontario.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Frankel has been deeply involved in professional leadership and regulation. He served for many years on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Podiatric Medical Association and completed a six-year term on Council at the Provincial College. His contributions included chairing the Discipline Committee, and he concluded his service as President of the College in his final year.

Dr. Frankel is widely recognized as a leading candidate in minimal incision surgery, particularly for the correction of bunions and hammertoes. His extensive background also allows him to perform open procedures when clinically appropriate, ensuring that each patient receives the most suitable treatment based on their condition — not a one-size-fits-all approach.
